There are 1.2 billion adolescents in the world, with an estimated 50 million
girls starting puberty each year. Sadly, two out of three girls don’t know
enough about what is happening to them during or as they start menstruating,
causing a drop of self-esteem and confidence. On any given day 300 million
girls and women are menstruating worldwide, 60% of these are in countries where
talking about menstruation is still a taboo, another 60% of these women and
girls knew nothing about menstruation at their first period.
In the last 30 years, Always has educated millions of
adolescent girls in 65 countries by providing fundamental puberty education in
school, reaching 17-20 million girls annually. The brand believes no girl
should lose her confidence due to what is a natural life process.
Always has been able to execute these programs through partnerships
with several Ministries of Education around the world by delivering class
sessions through NGO’s such as Save the Children, that provide
peer-to-peer connection, interactive learning sessions and menstrual education.
But also by reaching out to teachers, Mothers and Parents. These programs
enhance the organization’s mission of advocating and educating women to live
life to their fullest potential.
Early this year, Always joined UNESCO to announce the
launch a new Good Policy and Practice on Puberty Education and Menstrual
Hygiene Management. These efforts recognized Always’ Puberty Education as a
Model for Public-Private partnership.
Always schools program, in partnership with the Ministry
of Education visits a school with a registered nurse every day. The nurse educates
the girls on puberty changes, menstruation, and hygiene and is also able to
answer questions that the girls are not able to ask their parents or teachers. The
sessions are targeted for standard six girls. The program has been running in
the country since 1993.
