Gems Cambridge International School launches all-weather sports track

GEMS Cambridge International School recently launched  the first private all weather, ultra-modern sports track in the city to enhance community track and field sports.

 

The 400m weatherproof rubberized running track that circles a full sized astro turf sports field will be open to the sporting community at large, encouraging development of sporting activities and offering a platform to enhance skills.

Dr. Kipchoge Keino said, “This is a great milestone in the industry today as we launch the first private standard track in the city. Our country prides in sports as is evident in our performance internationally especially in athletics. We are elated to add to the list an ultra-modern track where talent can be further advanced.”
World and Olympic 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop, applauded the school for launching the track saying there is a need for more high quality sports facilities in the country to boost Kenyans participation in international championships.

The first International standard track by an educational facility in the country has been designed for a variety of activities, including track, rugby, soccer/football, baseball and rounders amongst others.

CEO and Principal GEMS Cambridge International School, Mr. Anthony Milward said, “The decision to construct the field was based on the passion GEMS Cambridge International School community has for developing talent from an early age.”

He reiterated that GEMS students will be privileged to train and play alongside professional local and international teams on this field, as it is the only privately owned astro turf field in Nairobi open to professional athletes from all over the world.

The school will also host Inter-house and Inter-school matches and sports days to encourage greater participation by students and early nurturing of talent. The students are especially encouraged to engage in sports activities as it also boosts their health and immunity
“Being in a country where athletics is a highly successful sport, building an astro turf field and tartan track was definitely the right choice.  It’s a standard requirement in quality for athletes.” Mr. Suhayl Esmailjee, Regional Director, GEMS Cambridge International School added.

The school plans to host national and international championships. Currently many leading Kenyan runners mostly compete in Europe.  The local spectators only get a chance to see them competing during national championships and trials.

Award winning, long distance runner, Edna Kiplagat, CEO Athletics Kenya, Isaac Mwangi K. and Kenya Rugby Association Head Coach, Mike Otieno also graced the event.

Progressive talks with the hockey and football leagues are underway to host some games.
