Kshs.96m to improve electricity supply in Kakamega

Quality of power supply in Kakamega is expected to improve as Kenya Power conducts a massive operation this weekend to rehabilitate power equipment and network serving the County that will cost the Company Kshs.96 million.

The power firm’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ben Chumo, said the operation will ensure that the electricity network serving Kakamega County is robust and power supply consistent to support efforts to minimize power outages occasioned by both planned and unplanned outages.

Dr. Chumo said the Company will replace 620 wooden poles with 60 concrete poles; refurbish 20 distribution transformers in the county; have 400 new customers connected; conduct extensive repair works within Kakamega County and upgrade overloaded electricity lines serving customers in the area among other work.

“I am aware that in the recent past, we have had challenges on the quality of supply within Kakamega County due to adverse weather
conditions characterised by lightening, thunderstorms and heavy rains, among others,” he said.

He added the Company has carried out similar exercises in 23 other towns countrywide at a combined cost of Shs.1.7 billion with marked service improvements on service delivery noted.

Dr. Chumo further urged county governments to set aside funds for constructing new power lines to supply power to their citizens not covered by the existing grid.
