43 photographers nominated for top awards

43 photographers have today been nominated as finalists for the 2015 Canon Kenya Photography Awards.

Out of 1144 photo entries submitted  between 19th December 2014 and 28th February 2015, the 43 were nominated in nine different categories: News, Creative, Sports, Nature, Portraiture, Daily Life, Young photographer of the year, Special category ( Climate Change), and People’s Choice.

The 43 were nominated following a rigorous judging process by four judges in the photography industry.  The judging was led by Gary Knight, a British photographer, past chairman of World Press Photo Awards and co-founder of the VII photo agency. He flew to Kenya to oversee the judging process.

“This is a key milestone in the photography industry. This year, we have seen rise in number of entries from young photographers, some taken from the simple smartphones to the ones taken with high-end professional cameras. This shows that we have so much potential growth in the Kenya photography industry. This year the winners will take home Ksh. 1.1 million.” noted Njeri Mwangi, Organizing Secretary, Photographer’s Association of Kenya (PAK)

She added: “The quality of entries from professional photographers was not as good and after the awards ceremony we shall start master class trainings for photographers to sharpen their skills.”

“The Swiss Embassy is excited to be sponsoring the Kenya Photography awards which is in its second year. We are happy that the Kenyan story is been told beautifully by its talented photographers,” noted Jacques Pitteloud, Switzerland Ambassador.

On his part, Enan Mwakoti, Canon Channel Account Manager noted: “It is a great honor to partner with Kenya Photography Awards. We congratulate all the nominees and we are looking forward to promoting Kenyan photography in the global stage. Through this awards, we are going to reward the best in Kenya photography.”
