US president Barack Obama has opened
his own Twitter account (@POTUS) and within 24 hours, has gained over
one million followers.
President Obama’s first Tweet was
retweeted over 230,000 times and favourited more than 300,000 times.
@POTUS currently follows 65 users among them
Michelle Obama (@FLOTUS), and Former Presidents Bill Clinton (@billclinton) and George H. Bush (@GeorgeHWBush). President Obama’s interest in sports
shows as he has also followed majority of Chicago’s sports teams.
The account now gives Americans an
opportunity to engage have a personal engagement with the President.
Political leaders around the world are
using Twitter to connect with their citizens. This includes African leaders
such as: Uhuru Kenyatta (@uhurukenyatta) who has 858k followers, Rwanda Head of State, Paul Kagame (@PaulKagame) with 973k followers, Nigeria’s President-elect, Mohammadu Buhari (@MBuhari) with 261k followers, and Jakaya Kikwete (@jmkikwete), the Tanzanian President, with 271k followers.
