Bharti Airtel has connected Embakasi Police Station with free internet.

Airtel Kenya explained that this is expected to provide seamless and effective internet connection to the station, with an aim of helping the police in improving the public security and ease communication between the police officers in the station, the local community and other security agents.

The police station received an internet device which will allow the station to access unlimited internet for free. The connection will allow the officers at the station to connect to relevant online platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allowing them to interact with the public, receive and send information related to security.

This will also give them access to security related information and news provided through the Internet which will aid their duties of serving members of the public. The device which has a fixed SIM card in it will also doubles as a mobile device, enabling the officers from the station to make and receive calls. The hotline number 0732804012 will ease communication between the police and the community at large in dealing with crime related matters.

In a statement, Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi said, “At Airtel, we acknowledge the fact that security is one of the key factors that influence the growth of businesses in the country. It is with this reason that we saw the important of ensuring that police officers in this station are able to access affordable and reliable communication which will open up superior channels of communication, giving them the opportunity to take security control to a whole new level.”

Speaking while receiving the device, Embakasi Police Station OCPD Apolo Wanyonyi emphasized the importance of communication in fighting crime, saying that the availability of high-speed internet connection will ensure timely and efficient communication between the police officers at the station and the community that they serve.

Airtel takes lead in providing reliable and affordable communication to police in Kenya. This has been achieved through the following initiatives;

  • In November 2014, Airtel connected Kayole police station in Nairobi County, the police officers in the station to ease communication between the police at the station, the local community and other security agents

  • In January 2013, Airtel in collaboration with Khetia's group of companies donated ten toll- free mobile phones to Kitale police station in Trans Nzoia County to help in curbing crime
  • In 2012, Airtel donated over 400 phones bundled with golden numbers (a special number with digits that are easy to recall from memory in times of need and emergencies) to police posts in Rift Valley  and Coast Province.
